Why Mustangs Matter

At Real World Horsemanship, mustangs aren’t just another breed of horse—they’re living pieces of American history.

For thousands of years, wild horses have shaped the landscapes of the American West. They carried explorers, Native peoples, ranchers, cavalry soldiers, and pioneers. Some escaped, some were turned loose, and over generations they adapted to survive in some of the harshest environments imaginable. Today’s wild mustangs are the descendants of those horses, and their story is woven into the story of our country.

Every mustang has earned its place. They survive droughts, predators, rough terrain, and changing seasons through intelligence, athleticism, resilience, and strong family bonds. Life in the wild isn’t easy, and these horses develop an incredible ability to think, adapt, and make good decisions.

Because of growing populations and limited natural resources, thousands of wild horses are gathered each year through the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse & Burro Program. Many of these horses are available for adoption, giving them the opportunity to become riding partners, ranch horses, trail horses, competitors, family horses, and lifelong companions.

At Real World Horsemanship, we believe every horse deserves to be understood before it’s expected to perform. That philosophy is especially important with mustangs. While they may come from the wild, they are not “untamable.” Given patience, consistency, and fair training, many become some of the most loyal, thoughtful, and dependable horses you’ll ever meet.

We also believe mustangs have something to teach us.

Meet a Mustang Experience

Ages 6 to 103 | Approximately 45–60 Minutes

Have you ever stood nose-to-nose with a truly wild horse?

This hands-on experience introduces you to the incredible story of America’s wild mustangs while giving you the opportunity to meet one up close in a safe, relaxed environment.

You’ll learn about the history of the Wild Horse & Burro Program, how mustangs are gathered and adopted, what makes them different from domestic horses, and what it really takes to earn the trust of an animal that was born free.

Depending on the horse and the day, you may have the opportunity to:

  • Meet one of our mustangs up close

  • Learn how horses communicate through body language

  • Groom and interact with the horse

  • Help with simple groundwork exercises

  • Ask questions about mustang training, adoption, and behavior

  • Take photos with your new four-legged friend

No riding experience is necessary, and there is no riding during this experience. It’s perfect for families, animal lovers, photographers, homeschool groups, or anyone who has ever been fascinated by wild horses.

Ride a Mustang Experience

Ages 10+ | Approximately 60 Minutes

Ever wondered what it’s like to ride an American Mustang?

This experience is designed for beginners through intermediate riders who want to experience these remarkable horses in a safe, supportive environment.

Before you climb aboard, we’ll introduce you to your horse, discuss mustang history and behavior, and review basic safety and riding skills. Then we’ll head out for a relaxed ride tailored to your experience level, either in the arena or on the trail, depending on rider ability and conditions.

You’ll discover why mustangs have earned a reputation for being intelligent, athletic, sure-footed, and incredibly willing partners.

Every ride is different because every horse—and every rider—is different.

Whether you’re checking a bucket-list item off your list or simply looking for a unique horseback riding experience, riding a mustang is something you’ll remember long after the ride is over.

Wild Mustang Groundwork Experience

Ages 10+ | Approximately 60–90 Minutes

This is where the real conversation begins.

Before a horse ever carries a rider, trust has to be built on the ground.

In this interactive experience, you’ll work alongside one of our mustangs to learn the foundations of communication, leadership, and partnership using practical, real-world horsemanship techniques.

You’ll learn concepts such as:

  • Reading equine body language

  • Personal space and boundaries

  • Catching and haltering

  • Leading with confidence

  • Yielding different parts of the horse’s body

  • Building trust through timing and feel

  • Understanding how horses learn

This is not a trick demonstration or a scripted show. Every session is shaped by the horse in front of us, creating an authentic learning experience that’s different every time.
